Life moves fast. Between work, school, responsibilities, and the endless to-do lists, it’s easy to get caught up in the serious side of life. But what if I told you that play – yes, play – is one of the most powerful tools for building resilience, improving mental and physical wellbeing, and fostering deep connections within your family?
I’m excited to kickstart Microblog Month with an extract from my book 365 Days of Play, written with Paul Campbell, the director of The School of Play. The book features daily activities that infuse joy, laughter, and meaningful connection into your everyday life. It’s a roadmap to a happier, healthier, and more connected family life through the transformative power of play.
Winnie the Pooh, the lovable bear with a gentle heart, taught us that joy can be found in the simplest moments. Whether he was savouring a pot of honey, watching a bee buzz by, or patiently waiting for his friend Christopher Robin, Pooh embraced life with a peaceful smile and a calm heart. Instead of rushing through the day, Pooh took his time, enjoying each moment just as it was. His ability to slow down, appreciate the little things, and embrace patience reminds us that sometimes the sweetest moments in life come when we pause and simply be present. Like Winnie the Pooh, let’s practise patience and mindfulness today!
The ‘Five Senses Walk’ Challenge
Go on a slow, mindful walk. Instead of focusing on where you’re going, take your time and focus on what’s around you.
Engage your five senses. Take turns naming things you can:
- See (e.g., a cloud shaped like a rabbit, the way leaves dance in the wind)
- Hear (e.g., birds chirping, footsteps on the sidewalk)
- Touch (e.g., the rough bark of a tree, the soft petals of a flower)
- Smell (e.g., fresh grass, a neighbors BBQ, the air after rain)
- Taste (e.g., if safe, like a sip of tea or a piece of fruit)
Channel your inner Winnie the Pooh, slow down, smile, and truly appreciate each sensation. No rushing, no worrying – just pure, simple joy in the present moment.
You’ll find 365 brain-boosting ideas and wacky movement games, gratitude reflections and kindness missions in 365 Days of Play. Daily actions designed to bring new surprises and get you you smiling, moving, and connecting in ways you never imagined.
