Field Day is not just for Elementary students!!! I teach high school students, and this year we are having our 2nd Annual Field Day for all of our 9th graders. Why? Because high school students are still KIDS!! To help prepare for our first year, we asked our 9th graders what their favorite games were as elementary school students. Based on their responses, we quickly had 20 plus relay games for our Field Day. Tug-o-War, Under the Broom Relay, Dizzy Bat, and of course, the water games were some of their favorites! I used Canva to create signs for each station that not only had the station name, but directions for the station as well.
In order to give every 9th grader, the opportunity to participate in Field Day, I sent out an invite to our Freshman Seminar teachers who teach every freshman. Now, our Field Day turned into a collaborative event! We ran Field Day for two days (we are on a block schedule), and it was a huge success!! Some of our PE students went to Field Day twice due to being in PE and Freshman Seminar, but we didn’t have any complaints.
How did we run Field Day? Each class is divided into three teams and rotated through the 20 plus stations. Each teacher stayed with his/her class as they rotated through the events. Bonus–when the teachers participated with the students. We have 90-minute blocks, and it took the entire class! Afterwards, we asked our 9th graders for feedback–what stations did they love? Which stations should we add in the future? The feedback helps us improve each year! We love our new tradition at Tates Creek!

I love the #Blog post! Beyond the 4 Ps of #FieldDay (Plan, Prep, Perform, Passion), #Physed Ts must embrace a 5th: Perspective. Let go of perfection, stay flexible, and focus on student joy. Trust the process—even when staff see things differently.
