About

Slowchathealth was launched in 2015, inspired by the great #slowchatpe blog and slow chat from Justin Schleider and also from the initial #healthedchat from Jeff Bartlett.

The #slowchathealth blog is aimed at health teachers working with students of all ages with the goal to promote online discussion, the sharing of resources and inspire all of us to provide a better experience for the students that we teach.

This blog exists to amplify the voices of all health teachers and as such guest bloggers are always welcome. We keep the conversation going through tweets and also on the Voxer app.

This blog is also where you will find all of the latest news regarding the #sendateacher initiative, a fundraiser aimed at sending teachers to the SHAPE America national conference.

You can find more information about me, Andy Milne, here.

In October 2019 I was fortunate to be invited onto the TEDx stage. Here it is:

I’m also proud to serve on the Advisory Board for Answer, a national organization that provides and promotes unfettered access to comprehensive sexuality education for young people and the adults who teach them.

For the 2021 school year this site aims to raise $2021 to ensure that young people get the information that they deserve. Please consider making a donation at the link below.

    1. That sounds like a good idea Mary! I use the WordPress site, and you can start with a free account. It is as simple as creating content and setting up the template to look how you would like it. I would suggest playing around with it initially, and perhaps we can sit down over coffee at SHAPENashville and bounce some ideas around. In the mean time, if you, or your students would ever like to contribute a blog post you are always welcome!

    Hi Andy,
As a ‘veteran’ Health/PE (all Wellness now) teacher of 40 years, finding this site and other dedicated teachers like you on Twitter has been a life saver as I wrap up my career! Anyone serious about SBHE and just how to be a good person should follow and contribute! Thank you for the excellent opportunity to bring new ideas into my classroom, or, “OUR” classroom!

    1. Thank you Julie for your kind words, and thank you for your 40 years of service too.
If you ever wanted to write a guest blog post – things I’ve learned from 40 years teaching health and PE – I’m ready for you!

Hi Andy, like you and many of us here, we will be on a shut down for awhile. I’d love to write up a short blurb about my experiences; lessons learned etc…I’ll give it a serious thought! Maybe there’s something I discovered that can help a new teacher…I’ve sure gained a lot from the new teachers in the field myself! -Be Well! Julie Andrews, Gilford High School

      2. Thank you Julie. I’d love to have you write something for the blog. Any time you wish to put your thoughts down you can send them to me at milnea@nths.net
Next month we will post a series for 500 word microblog posts. Perhaps that might also keep you entertained while we all practice social distancing.

I am so happy to have found a message board where I can hopefully get answers I have been looking all over for. I a currently a substitute teacher in california and I have noticed that none of the schools I have been to have a health class. Students do not even know what health class is. I want to teach elementary health but I am not sure where to start and if there are even jobs available. Please someone, anyone, please help.
